2009 Buttons Remaining: 2,946
as of: August 18, 2008

Welcome to the online home of the official Tartan Day Buttons! The 2009 buttons arrived on April 30th, so that means there are plenty of buttons available, just in time for your fundraising efforts during this summer's Highland Games season! Like last year, I'll be keeping a running total of how many buttons are left, so watch that red number above, and don't let it drop too low before you order, or you may miss out!

News!

Quite a number of people seemed to enjoy the "Tartan Day Button" T-shirts created to complement the Tartan Day buttons last year, so I'll be making them available again this year. Rather than printing up a bunch of t-shirts and hoping I can sell them, however, I've made them available through the good folks at zazzle.com. Just click on the "control panel" below to be taken to their site, where you'll be able to buy them in whatever size, color, and amounts you want!

FAQ (aka. Frequently-Asked Questions)

Who are you?

This site is owned and operated by Jack Barker of the Tartan Day Cooperative of Wisconsin. Those of you who have purchased buttons in the past may remember getting them from Babs Humphrey in Minnesota. Well, Babs is my mother and together, we decided in 2006 that I would take over the button-selling responsibilities and let her have a well-deserved rest.

How do I order 2009 Tartan Day Buttons?

Easy as pie—just click here for step-by-step instructions on how to download and mail in your 2009 Tartan Day Button order.

How much do the 2009 Tartan Day Buttons cost?

Click here to jump to the listing showing the prices for buttons (it gets lower the more you order!). Please note that shipping costs have gone up due to the United States Post Office increase in its rates.

Who designed the Tartan Day 2009 Button?

That would be me, Jack! I've designed the official Tartan Day Button since the 2001 button.

"Official, authorized" buttons? Says who?

The buttons are distributed under the auspices of The Scottish Coalition, the organization that has spearheaded the recognition of Tartan Day since 1997. They played an instrumental part in lobbying the Senate to pass U.S. Senate Resolution 155, as well as the House of Representatives' Resolution H.R. 41 (passed on March 9, 2005). The Coalition has helped to organize and encourage Tartan Day celebrations across the U.S.A. and Canada, and is dedicated to the preservation and strengthening of the traditional bonds between Scotland, the U.S. and Canada. The Tartan Day Buttons are part of the Coalition's efforts to spread a unified message about Tartan Day all across North America.

The 2009 button looks smaller than the round button we had in 2007. What's the deal?

Economics. In order to keep the pass-through price of the buttons down, we decided to produce a slightly smaller button. A larger button would have forced us to increase the price of the buttons, which have remained at "suggested resale price: $1.00" for eleven years now!

Is it possible to order previous years' Tartan Day Buttons?

I'm afraid not. Every year except 2003 we have completely sold out of all our buttons.

How many buttons are there?

We typically order around 4,000 each year, although demand in 2002 was so high, than an additional order was made (that's how we ended up with leftovers in 2003). I'd love nothing more than to sell out of my initial order of buttons early enough to warrant an additional supply.

What does the money you get from the buttons get used for?

Currently, the goal is to make the buttons self-sustaining. Up until now, we've had to order the buttons using our own money and hope to be reimbursed later. So the "profits" (what little they are) go towards the expense of ordering next year's buttons!

How are the buttons shipped?

We send all orders via the U.S. Postal Service in order to minimize shipping costs. Small orders generally go via first class mail; larger orders are shipped by Priority Mail. Orders to Canada are sent by Global Priority Mail regardless of size.

Have the shipping prices gone up?

Yes, due to the recent increase in pricing at the United States Post Office. Click here to jump to the listing showing the prices for buttons, as well as the shipping & handling costs. If you received an order form for 2009 buttons in the mail with your 2008 buttons, we will honor the pricing printed on that form (you must use the form that was sent). The pricing on those forms was based on a guesstimate of how much postage was going up, but unfortunately, it went up considerably more than I expected, especially for the flat-rate boxes I use to ship the buttons. So I had to raise the shipping and handling costs. Sorry!

Can I order buttons online?

Sort of. I don't yet have an online order form (and I can't take credit card payments), but we do have a PayPal account for rush orders. The ordering information page has details on how you can use PayPal to place an order for 2009 Tartan Day Buttons.

What's the deal with the T-shirts?

After many successful years of selling buttons, I am tentatively beginning to test the market to see if there is a demand for other products, such as t-shirts, sweatshirts, and so on. I've had good luck in the past using zazzle for similar projects, so I decided to use them for the t-shirts for the time being. If you'd like to see other Tartan Day Button products on zazzle, let me know!

Can I order buttons and t-shirts together?

No. Buttons are processed by us personally here at the Tartan Day Cooperative of Wisconsin; the shirts are processed by zazzle. Because these are two utterly separate entities, combined orders are impossible.

I have a different question!

Feel free to e-mail me at tartandaybuttons@charter.net and I will be happy to answer as best I can!
